Hawaii Grown, Hawaii Made: Naked Cow Dairy Farm & Creamery
For Businesses. Write a Review. Recommend this class! Fun evening! This is such a cute tour! They are very knowledgable and the LAST dairy farm in the state!
To remain solvent, van der Stroom has to stay resourcesful, of course-the dairy's aging room for its cheese is a repurposed Chevy freezer box pick-up truck that van der Stroom found abandoned in some bushes.
Still, Naked Cow has found its place in the all-natural food movement: Its products are now available at Whole Foods, and it supplies cheese and butter to 20 restaurants across Hawaii, as well as one cheese shop in California. Van der Stroom hopes to keep growing Naked Cow, perhaps even expanding to sell beef someday.
She doesn't seem to think she's started a dairy farm revival in Oahu, though. Van der Stroom is clearly one of the last of her kind, a dedicated farmer who has watched her life's passion dwindle and disappear on the Hawaiian islands. Its only thanks to her single-minded determination that the dairy farming practice on O'ahu has yet to go extinct.

Naked Cow Dairy is a small operation in Waianae that makes gourmet butter and artisan cheese.
We came for a date day for two for their cheese making class. This is one of the last cheese classes on the farm, however, they do hold cheese classes in other locations on island, currently in Kaka'ako, and in the future, probably Kailua.
Check their website. I think it's a great class! I learned so much and now have a greater appreciation for cheese making.
From the time it takes to the ingredients you choose to make it. This class, the ladies are amazing Cheeeeeese!!!

I went home with a variety of cheeses One of my children had a field trip to their farm Even the cow and a sheep was happy to give me a smile when i took a selfie with them! While holding the feed bucket I couldn't help but sing to myself Fun farm times, I tell you! My boyfriend, friends, and I went to the cheese making class. Monique and her staff were phenomenal: all were knowledgeable, friendly, and fun! We were able to sample homemade cheeses and butters with wine and crackers!
Afterwards, we were able to tour the farm. Who doesn't love farm animals!? They will be doing a pop up shop in Kakaako in April I plan to be there. Mahalo Monique and her staff!! I came here for a field trip for my daughter.
The field trip is very educational. They are the only dairy on Oahu located in Waianae. They discuss what cows, sheep and chicken eat, when they are able to milk a cow They don't milk a cow when they are pregnantwhether they have teeth on the top, bottom or both and etc. We were able to feed the cows, sheep and chicken.
We fed the cows "cookies", the sheep were fed hay and the chickens were fed pop corn and fruits. They have a small store on the property where they sell their products. You can find their products at the farmer's market at Pearlridge, Waianae and many others.
They sell flavored butter, hard cheeses and dips. Call to schedule a tour or if you'd like to stop by to buy their product since they are a small local business with a limited amount of staff.
The only way this night could have been more fun is if we had gone to Waianae on a Saturday and spent the entire day with Monique on her farm. Monique's passion for cheese making is contagious, and you'll find yourself unwittingly enraptured in what can only be described as a lecture in animal science.
Except she breaks it down as delicately and deliciously as the curds themselves; so you're left with a full-bellied happy baby feeling rather than a brain-exploding new-science learning belly ache.

Come ready to buy the cheese you'll taste, because after you taste them, you'll want to buy them all. We limited ourselves to four.
Well, four in addition to the fresh mozzarella we stretched ourselves and got to bring home. If you can't make a class, seek out Naked Cow Dairy's pop up cheese shops.
Follow them on Instagram. Support local. Was a great adventure getting out to Naked Cow Dairy Farm. Definitely recommend.

Support local businesses. They have unique flavors of cheese and butters incorporating local flavors. It was so much fun! My friend and I took the cheese making class in at the farm, and we had wonderful time there.
Not only we made mozzarella cheese in the class, but also we were able to try out other products they make 8 different kinds of cheese and 6 different kinds of butter. They also offered us wine to go with. I went home with satisfied feeling, mozzarella cheese I made, and cheese-kit! I highly recommend to take the class.
Found this adventure by accident. Always looking for fun things to do on this island that includes learning new things. They do a cheesemaking class on Saturdays.
Cant wait to go back! Our initial impression of this creamery was negative since once you arrive, if you were to follow the signs to find the farm shop, you would be led right back out the exit.
The "No trespassing" sign leading into the property is also misleading and off putting. The neighbors weren't helpful and actually very rude we asked for help from one of homes flanking the driveway and were told the creamery shop was closed. Luckily, we were persistent and drove all the way into the back of the property btw, the area marked for "parking" is located closer to the entrance to the property and is quite a walk on an uneven road to where the classes are and found Shantel, their lovely cheese maker!
Shantel invited us into what must be their storage and work area. She did apologize for the disarray explaining that they just returned from hosting their pop up cheese shop over the weekend.
She graciously allowed us to sample a number of cheeses and we made our purchase in cash - exact change Shantel did not have their card reader at that time nor change for a large bill. The cheeses we sampled were good. Mostly soft spreadable cheeses and we bought several to take home. It's a shame we never got to see their actual store or see much of anything besides the workshop.
Considering we came during their normal posted business hours, it is not cool that the shop wasn't open and the payment methods were restricted to exact change. Had we not happened to have some smaller bills in the car, we would've had to leave empty handed!
Additionally, the signage for this farm is terrible and made it very hard to figure out where exactly to go without "trespassing". Also, we were told that they usually don't have cheese sampling outside of their classes so if you go to just purchase cheese, don't expect to be allowed to taste any of it before buying we've never been told that before. We've been to a number of creameries before, and although Shantel was lovely and very helpful and saved this from being a one-star review! Went for the Ice Cream Festival.
I'm excited to see it grow next year. It was hot! We enjoyed this short trip! I'd say it's a half day trip depending on where you are driving from. They sold their cheeses and butter products.

Uncles handmade ice cream was also featured and sold there! The cheese making process was interesting, and the lady was very sweet.
The cheese was good quality. Wine was on the cheap side. The building is not maintained, and everything seems outdated and old. For the price, the class is not worth it. Crammed in a table with 8 other people, it was awkward. Animals do not seem taken care of If you purchase a groupon, you might have a difficult time getting ahold of them. I called and left a few messages. When I emailed then, it took a few days for then to email me back to reserve a spot.
Monique is so knowledgeable and welcoming. We loved learning about the science of cheesemaking and the mission of her farm. Definitely worth supporting them and making some delicious cheese! I'll definitely be encouraging friends to go! Loved the scenery driving to this place! Highly recommend their products! I've been eating their Big Island butter and Labni Yogurt Cheese lately : Even though I was looking for cuajada, as it is the only dairy farm I've found on island, I liked what I bought.
Just finished a Friday tour with my husband and 11 year old granddaughter. Sister owners Monique and Sabrina gave a great tour of their animals and cheese and butter making farm. Got to feed the cows and sheep, goats, turkeys, chickens and ducks. You can touch a beautiful horse and can hug Pickles the cow.
The cheese and butter tasting was a great chance to taste all their crafted goods. Thanks for the tour!! We got there way early, like 40 minutes, before they were even ready, but they kindly let us into the pen where they keep their goats, turkeys, chickens, and even a baby calf. That passed the time quickly! Once we were all settled, we enjoyed 5 pairings outside right on the farm! Pokai Bay Beach Park. Get to know the area. Write a review. Traveler rating. Traveler type.
